Last week, Seattle Times reporter Mason Kelley reported 2013 6’7 Lucas Meikle verbally committed to Gonzaga. Meikle is a kid who is flying under the radar on the AAU circuit. Left Coast Recruiting caught up with Meikle recently to talk about his commitment to Mark Few and the Zags.
So is it true that you verbally committed to Gonzaga?
Yes it is. I recently went there for a visit and committed last Thursday.
What did you like about your visit that made you want to commit?
Everything! The school is a really nice place and the facilities are really nice. I fit into their style of play as well and the program is one of the top programs throughout the nation.
How did Coach Few say he was going to use you on the court?
A stretch shooting 4 and become a 3.
So what did they say you need to work on to make an impact at the next level?
They didn’t say much this time but I know and have been told I need to work on my ball handling skills and defense. I also need to put on a little weight.
Why haven’t many people seen you play on the AAU circuit?
I play for a local AAU team called Pioneer Technologies. My Dad coaches the team and we just won a tournament in Portland.
Meikle displays a great basketball IQ on the court and is skilled at the high school level. Left Coast Recruiting has seen Meikle play many times. Zag fans don’t expect the Bellarmine Prep forward to make an instant impact. One thing is for sure is that Coach Few has a four year player that will contribute to the program for years to come.
